Otaku Dictionary - A to Z - Most spoken words in anime

Most of us mangas.

This word list below is a simple list, with only one of the meanings of words that can have several. Without any romanization or detailed explanation. Still, I hope you like it.

Otakus words with the letter -A-

• Aa, ee, um - yes (informal) "aa" is generally used by men, "um" is only used by women, and "ee" is used by everyone;
• Abayo – see you later, something like I'll see you later. Depending on the situation, it can sound a bit rude;
• Abunai - dangerous; it can sometimes be translated as "Watch out!" or "Duck!";
• Aburi – fried tofu;
• Ahou – idiot, jerk;
• Ai/ aijou – love;
• Aite - opponent;
• Aishiteru – verb to love. Used specifically for romantic love;
• Aisuru – love, dear, heart (in that sense);
• Aite - opponent, literally "the one I must face";
• Akai – red;
• Akari – light;
• Akirameru – to give up;
• Aku - Mal. Original name of Samurai Jack's enemy;
• Aku soku zan – literally, "eliminate evil instantly" (from Rurouni Kenshin);
• Akuma - demon;
• Rain - rain;
• Anata - you;
• You too - you also;
• Ane - older sister. Used when talking about the sister and she is not present; however, if you are speaking directly to her, or about someone else's sister, you use "onee";
• Anisan, ani - older brother. The same rule applies as for sister, with the term used directly with brother being "onii";
• Year - Huh... Um..;
• Ano/sono/kono/dono/ - used before a noun; they mean, respectively: that, this, this one, and which one?
• That day – literally, on this day
• That person – that person
• That time – that time
• Anou – well..;
• Ara, ore – oh, hum? Ara is used by men, and ore, by women;
• Atarashii – new
• Thank you very much – more formal than "Thank you", but much less so than Doumo Arigatou Gozaimasu;
• Morning - morning
• Asagohan/hirugohan/bangohan/gohan – respectively: breakfast, lunch, dinner, meal. Gohan, as many Dragonball fans may know, is cooked rice, an essential food for the Japanese;
• Atama - head
• Atsui – hot (temperature or heat)

• Baka – Idiot
• Baka mitai – You're so stupid it hurts!
• Bakayarou - idiot, jerk
• Bakana – impossible, absurd
• Bakemono - monster, apparition – literally, "monstrous thing." A more appropriate term for monster would be "obake";
• Banzai – shout of encouragement, used in cheering (raise your arms three times while shouting this);
• Be-da - Here, while the character sticks out their tongue at someone. More or less equivalent to "Nana-nana-nããã!"
• Bento – the equivalent of "lunch box" or "meal box";
• Betsu ni – particularly. Often translated with a negative meaning, such as "nothing", "not really", etc;
• Bishounen - handsome boy
• Bishoujo – pretty girl
  Bijin - beautiful woman (hottie)
• Bijutsu - art
• Boku – I (said by a man)
• Bouzu – informal and insulting way to refer to a boy; curiously, it is also a term for "Buddhist monk";
• Budo – philosophy, guide, moral codes that guide martial arts fighters;
• Bushido – code of honor of the samurai. One of its fundamental principles is "death before dishonor";
• Busu – ugly woman, witch
• Pig – pig

• Chotto matte! - Wait a minute! Wait a little! (chotto means, among other things, a little, or a short period of time)

• Doki doki – onomatopoeia for heartbeat, can be used to express anxiety

• Doush'tano? - What's happening?, What's the problem?

• You're welcome - You're welcome;
• Please - Here it is;
• Doumo – Thank you;
• Thank you very much - Thank you (very formal);

• Genki – energy, literally. It can be used to refer to a cheerful, lively person;

• Ittemairimasu - I am going (formal and polite way)
